  Rekeying

Schlage makes rekeying easy.

Any Schlage lock can be rekeyed to match other Schlage locks in your customer's home. They can eliminate a tangle of keys and replace it with one Schlage key.

Maximum Security Deadbolt Rekeying

Step 1. Preparation

  1. Remove adapter ring. Place deadbolt cylinder housing face down on a smooth surface.
  2. Lift crank assembly and retainer over bumps with flathead screwdriver and remove.
  3. Remover the black retainer, crank, flat spring and washer.

Step 2. Remove the Cylinder Cap

  1. Match up grooves of cylinder cap with teeth on the black cylinder cap removal tool, pushing down and turning counter clockwise until cap comes off completely.
  2. Remove cap, cylinder bar, washer, pin and spring from cylinder and set aside.
Note: Spring is in the small hole just below the pin. To remove spring, turn the cylinder housing upside down and gently tap it on the table.

Step 3. Remove Cylinder Plug

  1. Insert key and turn clockwise to 2 o'clock position. Place flat end of follower bar against threaded end of cylinder plug.
  2. Caution: To avoid exploding top pins, push follower bar all the way through in one continuous motion. When completed the housing should rest in the middle of the follower bar.
  3. Empty the top pins from the cylinder plug and remove old key. Discard old pins and keys.

Step 4. Load New Top Pins

  1. Use the numbers on the key bow, or use key gauge to determine new combination. Insert new key until key bow touches the cylinder.
  2. Load new top pins (pointed end down) into cylinder plug with pins from the rekeying kit corresponding to new combination.

Step 5. Reinsert Cylinder Plug

  1. Again, place the flat end of follower bar against threaded end of cylinder plug and slide cylinder housing onto plug.
  2. Place thumb against cylinder housing and plug face and carefully pull out key.
Note: Do not pull key out unless securely holding plug face with your thumb. This keeps the plug in place.

Step 6. Cylinder Cap Reassembly

  1. Place cylinder housing on smooth surface. Insert spring and then cylinder pin into same housing.
  2. Place cylinder bar with washer on top of cylinder plug. Make sure pin is in the opening of the washer. Test cylinder by inserting key and turning left and right. If key is hard to turn, loosen cap a notch by turning counter clockwise. If key won't come out of the plug, tighten cap by turning clockwise.
  3. Position cylinder cap and screw down clockwise with the blace cylinder cap tool until cap is barely tight. The cylinder pin should pop into the groove.

Step 7. Reassemble Crank Assembly

  1. Place washer and crank in the correct order on the cylinder bar.
  2. Push retainer, with the word “up" facing you, onto the cylinder bar until it sops against the cylinder cap.
  3. Slide flat spring in place from the side so it fits underneath the crank and retainer. The curved edges of the flat spring should hang over the shelf on the cylinder housing.
  4. Replace adapter ring with the words facing you. (Remove for 1 1/2" diameter hole.)

To rekey the inside cylinder of B362 Maximum Security deadbolts, simply repeat steps 2 through 7.
