Basic Metal Characteristics
- Brass/Bronze
Considered to be
"enduring metals" since they are highly resistant to
corrosion. Differences in color may result from the
proportions of the metal (copper, lead, and zinc with
bronze containing some tin).
- Iron/Steel
As surface hardware, it is not as desirable since if exposed
to dampness, products will easily rust. Steel tends to be
somewhat stronger than iron due to the combination of various
metal composition (iron, carbon, manganese, phosphorus,
and sulfur).
- Stainless Steel
A hard
rust-resisting metal used extensively for architectural door
trim (pulls, pull plates, kick plates). Stainless steel not
only contains iron, but chrome and nickel as well.
- Aluminum/Zinc
Easily cast, forged,
or stamped. Finished, aluminum and zinc provide a
cost-effective alternative to brass.
